Kisho 料亭 吉祥 in Johor Bahru is a jewel of authentic Japanese cuisine, where every detail is encapsulated in an intimate dining experience. Celebrating special occasions here, as JEN CHOW JACK LI did, reveals the restaurant's commitment to quality and tradition. The Unagi Hitsumabushi is a must-try; the eel's delicate crispness and the unique dashi broth set it apart from typical offerings. The preparation may take time, but its freshness makes it worthwhile.

Another highlight is the Special Chashiu Ramen, boasting flavorful pork slices in a rich broth that leaves patrons wanting more. As Kameta Mama notes, the freshness of the food—evident in both the sashimi and sushi—is unmatched. The chef, trained in the art of traditional Japanese cooking, ensures an exquisite representation of flavors that are hard to come by.

While some diners like Joon Wei Gow mention the pricing, many agree that the quality justifies the cost, especially for the omakase experience. With seafood sourced directly from tanks and a chef who embodies a lifetime of culinary expertise, Kisho 料亭 吉祥 truly is a destination for anyone seeking a remarkable and authentic Japanese dining experience.

Reviews of Kisho 料亭 吉祥 consistently highlight its authentic Japanese dining experience, underscored by exceptional freshness and delicate flavors that reflect the chef’s high-level expertise. Patrons appreciate the intimate, traditional atmosphere and personalized service, often noting the chef’s friendliness and engagement. The quality of ingredients, particularly in sushi, sashimi, and meat dishes, is frequently praised as among the best in Johor Bahru and even Malaysia. However, some feedback points to a relatively limited menu selection compared to other local Japanese restaurants and a higher price point. Despite this, the overall sentiment remains positive, emphasizing the restaurant’s dedication to genuine culinary craftsmanship and a refined dining ambiance.

We had the pleasure of celebrating a birthday at this authentic Japanese restaurant. It was a truly delightful experience, thanks to the intimate and traditional Japanese-style dining room arranged for us in advance. Every detail, from the service to the food, was thoughtfully executed. 1. Unagi Hitsumabushi – The highlight of the meal. The eel was incredibly fresh, prepared on the spot for optimal flavor. The skin was perfectly crisp, while the meat was firm and flavorful—unlike the overly soft texture found in most other restaurants. The accompanying dashi broth had a unique tea aroma that added an elegant touch when poured over the rice. Although the preparation took over 45 minutes, it was well worth the wait. 2. Special Chashiu Ramen – The ramen was a masterpiece. The chashiu slices were delicately thin, with the perfect balance of fat and lean meat, offering an exquisite texture that’s hard to find elsewhere. The broth was rich, deeply flavorful, and neither overly greasy nor salty. We couldn’t resist finishing every drop, making this dish an exceptional value for its price. 3. Chawanmushi – The steamed egg was freshly made, with a soft, slightly watery texture rather than the firmer consistency found elsewhere. It was subtle in flavor, highlighting the natural sweetness of the scallops and mushrooms. While it wasn’t the most standout dish, it was a lovely complement to the meal. Overall, a highly recommended restaurant for anyone seeking an authentic Japanese dining experience with attentive service and exceptional food.

No doubt the food is fresh but a bit high price. If got money I will try their omakase. All the foods we ordered are fresh and tasty. The Japanese boss is very friendly and nice. Another thing is the choices is not much if compare to other Japanese restaurants at JB.

This is the only restaurant in Johor where you can enjoy original Japanese cuisine. The head chef, who once ranked at the top in Japan for both traditional Japanese cuisine and sushi, creates dishes with such delicate flavors that they’re rarely found even in Japan. The simplicity and taste are truly exceptional. When it comes to meat dishes, this restaurant is undoubtedly the best in Malaysia. Not only do they serve Wagyu beef, but they also offer free-range Japanese chicken dishes. Their semi-raw chicken sashimi is a rare delicacy, made possible by air-freighting fresh chicken directly from Japan, ensuring both quality and safety. Seafood is as fresh as it gets, with the option to choose directly from the tank. The chef, a former fisherman with extensive knowledge of seafood, masterfully prepares sashimi and sushi that bring out the natural flavors of the fish. The cost of a meal ranges from RM700 to RM2,000 per person, but given the quality, it is reasonably priced. I find myself traveling to Johor just to dine here, as no other restaurant in Malaysia makes me feel as happy and fulfilled during a meal as this one does.

I have a hard time finding this restaurant as it is housed very inconspicuously along the other shops. Luckily the Google photo has a big logo of the company above the restaurant and we used it to find this place. The owner cum chef is a Japanese from Fukuoka. We opted to sit at the counter and chit chatted with the chef. The sashimi is very fresh. The wasabi and soy sauce were homemade and tasted very good. They serve different sets of omakase but as we are not very hungry, we opted for the Ala Carte menu. Will come again.
